COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM "1000 KICKS"

The 1000 kicks program is in its ninth year. The inspiration of this program came in December, 1999, when the ACHES Girl's Soccer teams, together with their families and coaches gave a Christmas gift to the City of Hope Pediatric Ward. On December 16, after playing a soccer game, a caravan of players and parents made their way from San Marino High School to Duarte's City of Hope to deliver 50 pairs of pajamas, 200 videos, many books and other gifts to patients in the pediatric unit, the outpatient clinic and the bone marrow center. Ileana Geestman, founder of the Desi Geestman Foundation, expressed the need for warm, cozy, fun pajamas. The Falcon girls rose to the occasion with excitement and enthusiasm and provided a gift for many very, very sick children. That was the start of a tradition and a challenge for girls in the soccer program to look beyond themselves and make a difference in the lives of others.
Throughout the year, the girls will be given and opportunity individually and as a team to complete community service hours.
As projects are completed, hours are logged with the coordinator (Mrs. Shartsis) and participants are recognized for their service at the Banquet. Because this is such an important part of the soccer program, commitment is imperative. When girls are asked to sign up to participate in an event, it is expected that they will be in attendance at the date and time.  In addition, the expectation is that each girl will attend as a representative of CVHS and the Girl's Soccer Program. Many local organizations and schools contact us regarding projects and events where volunteers are needed. Players are not limited only to the opportuniities provided through the team. Any time a player participates in a community service project she can pick up a Record of Service Form from the school counseling office or download it from www.cvhsfalcons.com - Your community service hours for soccer will also go toward the Service Learning Project through the school. In order to be considered for awards at the banquet, all hours must be turned in by March 1, 2010.
